Moving Companies in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Ranked on federal and state carrier records — operating authority, insurance continuity, complaints per truck per year and whether a revoked carrier once operated from the same address. Reviews are one input of five, and a thin one counts for less.

Covers the whole Philadelphia–Camden–Wilmington, PA-NJ-DE-MD area, not just the city — about half the movers serving Philadelphia are registered in the suburbs.

Ranked movers in Philadelphia

Every company below holds active operating authority or a Pennsylvania certificate, has insurance on file, and has enough public reviews to say something about. At most one company per parent van line. Placement is not for sale.

We publish 9 rather than padding to a round number. 3164 of the 3215 companies we checked failed eligibility outright — no active authority, broker-only, no insurance on file, outside the metro, too few reviews, or a duplicate listing.

Ranking method

What a move costs in Philadelphia

We read the 5 guides that publish moving prices for Philadelphia and took only the figures they actually state. The spread is theirs, not ours — these guides disagree, and several quote each other. Where one was written by a company we rank, it says so.

The number is how many of the guides say so. An item on both sides is one the guides disagree about — worth asking before you book.

These are wider than the local ones for a reason: a long-distance price follows the mileage more than the size of the home, so Philadelphia to New Jersey and Philadelphia to California sit inside the same row. Nobody can quote you usefully without asking where you are going — get the answer in writing as a binding estimate.

From MovingCRM’s own data
$900average local move in Philadelphia

Taken from real moves recorded on our partner companies' own websites — the software they quote and invoice in — rather than an estimate written for an article.

What Philadelphia says on Reddit

We read the threads about movers in this city's own subreddits — five years of them — and had each one classified for who people actually recommend, as opposed to who simply gets named. Recommendations are worth a small part of the score. Being talked about is worth nothing, and being talked about badly is worth less than that.

Recommended by name

6 of the 9 companies here came up in no thread at all. That is not evidence against them — plenty of good movers are simply never posted about, and a company can be excellent and invisible. No usernames are collected and no reviewer is identified. We count threads, not people, and a thread that names a company twice is one thread.

Moving in Philadelphia: what to check

What the law actually requires

Intrastate: PA PUC certificate

Moving households within Pennsylvania requires a Certificate of Public Convenience from the Public Utility Commission. We do not read that register yet, so a company holding one gets no credit for it here — and a mover working only inside Pennsylvania, which needs no federal authority at all, cannot currently appear on this page. It is the largest known gap in what we check.

Interstate: USDOT number and HHG authority

Crossing a state line requires an active USDOT number and FMCSA operating authority registered for household goods. Registration alone is not authority — plenty of active USDOT numbers are not allowed to move your furniture. We check the USDOT number and the insurance filings. We stopped scoring or showing the household-goods flag itself in September 2026, because FMCSA's own systems disagree about it and a flag we cannot check is not evidence in either direction.

Insurance on file, and continuously

Public liability and cargo insurance must be filed with the FMCSA and kept current. A filing that lapses and is reinstated leaves a record, and we count lapses in the last 24 months against the score.

Complaints are public

The FMCSA runs a national consumer complaint database. We count complaints per truck per year rather than the raw total, because a 200-truck carrier will always have more complaints than a four-truck one.

What a real quote covers

Written estimate before the day Always ask
Binding or not-to-exceed price Ask explicitly
Survey of the job — in home or by video Expect one
Valuation coverage explained in writing Not insurance by default
Travel time and how the clock runs Get it in writing
Stairs, long carry and shuttle charges Named up front

Walk away from any of these

A quote given over the phone with no survey, for a job the company has never seen.
A large deposit demanded before the truck arrives, especially by cash or wire.
No USDOT number on the website, or one that resolves to a different company.
A name that changed recently while the address and phone number did not.
An estimate that is not in writing, or a blank document you are asked to sign.
Refusal to explain what valuation coverage pays out when something breaks.

Frequently asked

studio or 1 bedroom, $380 to $880; 2 bedrooms, $790 to $1,420; 3 bedrooms, $1,050 to $2,400; 4+ bedrooms, $1,450 to $3,200. MovingCRM's own data puts the average local move in Philadelphia at $900. Those are ranges published by moving-cost guides for this metro, read and quoted rather than estimated — the full table, with who said what, is on this page. A long-distance move follows the mileage more than the size of the home, so the same guides span far wider for it.
We do not rank on price and we will not tell you who is cheapest, because a quote depends on your date, your stairs and how much you own — nobody can answer it from a list. What we can tell you is who will give you a number before you call: 4 of the 9 companies on this list publish a price on their own website, and the rest quote on enquiry. Each listing shows which, along with whether the company offers a binding estimate — a price it has to hold to. Without one, federal rules let a mover ask for up to 110% of the quote before unloading, which matters more to what you pay than the headline rate.
The guides we read put crew rates between $60 and $390 an hour for this metro. That is a crew rate, not a rate per person — movers are booked as a two or three-person crew with a truck, so "one mover for three hours" is not usually something you can buy. Check what the hour covers before you compare two quotes: the guides agree the truck, the crew and basic valuation cover are normally in it, and that heavy items, packing labour, stairs and long carries are normally charged on top.
Every company is scored on five groups of evidence, in this order of weight: regulatory integrity, customer evidence, transparency, operational substance and market presence. Regulatory integrity covers operating authority, insurance continuity, complaints per truck per year and whether a revoked carrier previously operated from the same address. Customer evidence is review ratings adjusted for how many people left one, plus how recent they are. Operational substance is verified fleet size, operating age and whether the company staffs its own crews. Transparency is what the company will tell you before you book — a binding estimate, how it surveys a job, how valuation coverage works — and it carries more weight than operational substance because it is the one group a company can change by choosing to be straight with you. Market presence is organic search position and Reddit recommendations — the smallest group by some distance, published beside the score rather than buried in it, and dropped entirely for any city we have not searched; read the conflict note before you weigh it. We publish the components and their order but not the exact weights, because those are the first thing a reputation-management firm would optimise against.
No. There are no sponsored slots and no paid placement. Nothing a company buys from us — software, advertising, anything — is visible to the scoring code, and that is enforced by a test that re-scores every company with all commercial data removed and fails the build if a single score moves. Where MovingCRM has a commercial relationship with a listed company, that is disclosed on the listing itself. No company on this list has one today.
A carrier owns trucks and moves your goods. A broker sells the job to someone else, and you often do not learn who until the truck arrives. Both are legal and both must be registered with the FMCSA, but only a carrier is answerable for what happens to your things. Broker-only companies are excluded from this ranking, which is one of the reasons the list is shorter than the directories you will find elsewhere.
We started from every moving company we could find operating in the Philadelphia metro and checked each against federal and state registries. 51 held active federal authority — no state certificate can qualify a company here yet — had insurance on file, were inside the metro and had enough reviews to say anything about. From those we publish 9, capped at one company per parent van line and spread across local, long-distance, specialty and storage work. Publishing a short list and saying why is more useful than padding it out.
Yes, and there are two separate licences. A company moving households inside Pennsylvania needs a Certificate of Public Convenience from the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission. A company crossing a state line needs an active USDOT number and FMCSA operating authority registered for household goods, plus public liability and cargo insurance on file. A company can hold one and not the other. We show neither, and you should know why: we do not read the Pennsylvania register yet, and FMCSA's household-goods flag is not currently reliable enough to print — their own systems disagree about it. What we do check is that the USDOT number is active and that the insurance is on file.
Federal carrier and authority records are refreshed daily, safety measurement monthly, and the federal complaint database whenever it is republished. The Pennsylvania register is not read at all yet. Reviews and company websites are re-read monthly for published cities. Every published ranking is a dated, immutable snapshot — a correction produces a new one rather than editing the old.
